“You know that I am not a lady.” She set her hands on her hips, hoped he couldn’t tell how her pulse raced. “We are worlds apart, the two of us.”

“And if I tell you it matters not a whit to me?” He stepped closer, so dangerously handsome in the soft candlelight.

“You can say what you wish - men always do.” She leaned her hip against the table. Something about his nearness made the floor seem to dip beneath her feet.

“I say my mind, lady.”

She frowned. “If you are not troubled by my low birth, there can only be one reason.”

“And so there is.” He leaned in and kissed her brow. “You enchant me.”
